ATTN: Angel

The building seemed to creak at night. Sometimes it even seemed alive. Mimi sighed and wrapped her arms around herself, wishing for a moment that she had somewhere, anywhere else to go. But at the same time it had meant so much of her to finally get a place of her own, to finally be independent. She wasn't about to give it all up within a month just because of a little bit of cold. That wasn't who she was. Not at all.

So instead she sat on the edge of the bed, wrapping her arms around herself, shivering in the cold and wanting the one thing that seemed to make her warm lately. She knew she should stop, that it was bad, that there was everything in the world to lose, but it was days like this when she just didn't feel like bothering.

rhinestones

Angel pushed Mimi's door open without knocking. Hell, if her best friend couldn't do it, who could?
"Chica?" she called into the silent apartment. She heard a faint rustle from the bedroom which indicated life. So listening to the click of her heels (She'd decided on the bubble gum pink pumps with the reinstones in the straps) she entered, finding her little girl sitting slightly hunched on the bed.
"Honey?" She sat down beside her gingerly, not knowing what to expect. "Why are you sitting here in the dark? Turn on a light."
Mimi shook her head weakly and slumped into Angel's shoulder.

Re: rhinestones

"Oh, Ang...did you ever have one of those days when you just didn't feel like...you?" Mimi sighed. "Hay dios mio, it's fucking cold in here."

Dutifully, Angel got up and shut the window with a soft slam, then returned to her side. After a pause she asked:
"So you gonna tell me what's really wrong? Or do I have to injure myself trying to figure it out?"

"Fuck, am I that obvious?" Mimi laughed bitterly, fiddling with one of her long earrings, turning the beads over and over in her fingers. "Fine. Here. You remember Benny, right? I told you about him? Real bastard?"

"Apparently we're about to find out. Bastard bought this building about a week ago. So Mr. Disaster? He's my new super." Mimi shook her head, stalked across the room, her arms crossed over her chest. "Fucking appropriate, no?"

Angel laughed derisvely, unable to believe the stranger's gaul.
"Now ya see that? They say men who buy expensive cars have small parts. But honey, if you break it off with a girl and then *buy her building* you must have a vagina or something!"

Mimi had to laugh at that, and for a moment it felt like things were getting back to normal. But then she noticed how pale Angel was looking under all that makeup and glitter...what they had talked about in Life Support the previous weekend. Mimi shivered again, and put a hand impulsively to her stomach.

"You find a job yet, Ang?"

Benny sat behind the large wooden desk mindlessly tapping his pen on a pad of paper. He had been contemplating calling her for hours, but had so far resisted. The last conversation they had was far less than pleasant and he doubted she wanted to talk to him now. He also knew that Allison was probably waiting for him, but he didn't really care. He was too busy fixating on her, the girl from the Kat Scratch. Giving in he picked up the phone, dialed and waited what felt like forever for the phone to ring. He wasn't even sure if she would be home, then he heard her voice.

"Hi Mimi, it's Benny. Please don't hang up." he waited for her reply, hoping it wouldn't be a click followed by a dial tone.

"Pudrete, Benny." Mimi watched as Angel's eyes widened in amusement. She knew Benny had no idea what she'd just said to him, but it only doubled her satisfaction at the silence on his end of the line. "Angel and I were just talking about you, hijueputa." She wasn't sure why she didn't just take his assumption and slam down the phone, but there was something about him that had always rendered her completely unable to just walk away.

Hang up on him! Angel willed with her mind. Don't do this again! Just hang up!
She was so worried for her girl. Mimi wanted love almost too much and ran from man to man trying to find comfort. Angel knew what that was like...She knew all too well. But the word 'Positive' blaring up from the sheet in the doctor's office had changed all that. She was getting her life together, and wanted the same for Mimi.

Noticing the look on Angel's face, Mimi covered the receiver with one hand while she waited for Benny's reply. "I'm just gonna see what he wants," she mouthed, though it felt odd defending herself to her best friend. Maybe he was unhappy with his marriage of convenience after all. Maybe he'd decided to divorce Alison after just two weeks.

But then what? What if he did want her back? The thought scared her, because somewhere deep down, she knew she'd never be able to resist him if he begged her forgiveness. She'd always had a weakness for anyone who made her feel valuable, ill-used or not.

Benny wasn't quiet sure how to respond, but he was thankful not to be listening to the buzz of a dialtone. He knew she had just insulted him though he wasn't exactly sure what she had said. She never seemed to insult him in a language he could understand, and he wondered why.

"Whatever you just called me I'm sure I deserved it." He stuttered trying to regain his composure "Look Mimi, I was just hoping we could get together. You know talk, and maybe grab a bite to eat."

Her heart leapt at the words, but seemed to lodge in her throat. Just what she'd wanted, but now she was entirely unsure of what to do.

"Benny, I um..." Mimi looked at Angel, silently wishing that her friend could somehow settle this whole mess for her. As fiercely as she fought to be independent, she always seemed to fall right back into the pattern of relying on others.

Angel made a questioning face as Mimi looked almost pleadingly at her. She mimed eating with her free hand and then gestured to the phone. He wanted to take her out to eat. Angel frowned and shook her head fiercely. If it was going to be over, then it had to difinitively be over.
"Don't," she mouthed, praying that this time Mimi would listen.

He sensed her hesitation and didn't want to give her a chance to say no..

"It's just dinner.. No harm in that right? I'll be there in 20 minutes to pick you up. Okay?" He waited then hung up.

"I...okay." She knew there was no longer anyone on the other end, but still felt desperately that she had to keep this on her terms, at least in Angel's eyes. "Fine, but Benny? Just dinner."

Mimi put the receiver down and sighed, feeling sick in the pit of her stomach. Not only had she given in, she'd lied to the one person she should have been able to trust.
